<aside> ⚠️ In this course, you will learn how to program, test programs, document these programs, and talk about your programs. As in many real-life situations, there are given requirements and constraints. One crucial aspect is time management! We encourage you to start as early as possible with your assignments. Usually, there are some weeks between when we announce an assignment and the submission date.

In a course with over 600 students, we must be very strict about a specific course policy to keep it fair to everyone. For this reason, we do not offer individual deadline extensions! However, there may be some exceptional cases where it might be necessary to ask for an extension. For this case, we have a defined procedure that has to be followed in order to request an extension.

Please do not consider this as rude or unfair from our side. We are really happy to support you as much as we can during the official assignment period. The entire course team will give their best to help you this semester. However, individual arrangements in large classes are an enormous organizational challenge for the entire course team (responding to emails, informing tutors, changing automized internal processes, probably booking additional rooms, additional time commitment of lecturers and tutors, etc.)

Prerequisite

• You have to request a specific deadline extension at least one day before the deadline. All deadlines are on Wednesdays, so make sure to write the email latest on Tuesday 23:59.
• There is no way to ask for an extension after the deadline.
• Contact the lecture team and not your tutor ([email protected]).
• Your email has to contain all the required information (see checklist).

Checklist

• [ ] Compose an email to [email protected]

• [ ] FOR ESP: Write "[ESP] Deadline Extension for A[n]" in the subject line, FOR OOP1: Write "[OOP1] Deadline Extension for A[n]" in the subject line

• [ ] Give a short (but precise!) explanation of why you need a deadline extension.

• [ ] We accept the following causes of deadline extensions:

  i) Serious illness or injury

  ii) Serious personal reasons (severe illness of family members or other tragic events).

• [ ] How long would you like to have a deadline extension?

  Due to organizational reasons, there is a maximum of five days that we can give in very specific cases (there is no possibility to get more than five days). This maximum of five days ensures that you can take the assignment interview within the same week as the rest of the students (probably on the last day of the interviews).

• [ ] Attach a document proving your situation (e.g., doctor confirmation).

• [ ] Send the email (again, make sure it is to [email protected]).

Further Information

• Deadline extensions are absolute exceptions!
• We just accept them for the above-mentioned cases. Here is an (unfinished) “best-of” list from the last semesters with requests that have not been accepted:
  • "But I just pushed 10 seconds too late."
  • "I just had a last-second fix to make."
  • “My roommate spilled beer all over my notebook."
  • “I started too late because I had other assignments as well.”
  • “I had the unexpected chance to fly to Las Vegas for an extended weekend, so I could not work on the assignment.”
• There is more than enough time. Please use it. Starting late is no excuse for an extension.
• Writing us an email does not guarantee that you will get the extension. The lecture team will consider each case and decide how long the extension will be.
